THE FLYING BULGARS-WHO ARE THEY?
DANIEL BARNES - Daniel Barnes the Toronto born drummer,
composer and singer is son to composer of international renown Milton
Barnes. Though mostly self taught Daniel has received instruction
on drum set from Jim Blackely, Claude Ranger and Marvin Smitty Smith.
Theory came from professor Paul Read . Daniel's premier CD as leader,
First Impression is being released in '03 through Festival Distribution.
Self produced it features his writing, playing, singing and arranging
in the large sphere of contemporary jazz he calls home. The long
standing Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band's latest CD (Daniel's second
with the group) features his writing and playing with world music
ensemble Mernie draws on Arabic, African and East Indian music with
Daniel contributing drumming, singing and lyric writing. As a sideman
he can be heard on Joe Sealy's Africville Suite (Juno for contemporary
Jazz '96), John Alcorn's Quiet Nights (best Male Vocalist, Jazz
Report Awards '99), Rita DiGhent's Standard Sessions Volume 1 (runner
up, best album, National Jazz Awards '02), The Bourbon Tabernacle
Choir's Shy Folk, five feature film soundtracks and more. He's appeared
live in concert with Jane Bunnett, Pat LaBarbera, Holy Cole , Carol
Welsman , Bass is Base, The Drifters and more. Daniel has toured
through the U.S., Europe and Africa with Ethiopian singing stars
Aster Aweke and Mouhamed A hmed recording hits with them in the
late 1990's.
VICTOR BATEMAN - Victor Bateman is a multifaceted musician
with a very long history as an accompanist and band leader. He is
at home in just about every genre of popular music from Bluegrass
to, well, klezmer. In addition to performing with such varied artists
as Amos Garrett and Jean Derome, artists united solely by the fact
that they are the best at what they do, Victor leads three trios
of his own. The Victor Bateman Trio plays contemporary jazz- both
covers and originals; Another Country, whose CD was released last
year, stretches country and folk music into new shapes and Porkchops
reinterprets bebop jazz through the lense of 20th century free playing.
Victor also conducts workshops in improvisation. The first bass
player in the Flying Bulgars when they were formed, Victor returned
to the band in 2004.
DAVID BUCHBINDER is a multi-talented performer, composer
and cultural inventor who brings a spirit of intensity and inquiry
to everything he does. This approach grows partially out of his
early association with musical visionary Freddie Stone, as well
as teachers Abraham Adzinya and Muhal Richard Abrams. He has been
involved in the creation and presentation of New Yiddish music since
1987 and has earned a reputation as one of its compositional and
instrumental leading lights, through the FLYING BULGAR KLEZMER BAND
and his creation of ASHKENAZ: A Festival of New Yiddish Culture.
He is a member of the Arab-Yiddish fusion quartet, MEDINA, and has
recently launched a new ensemble under his own name. Since 1993
he has garnered increasing acclaim for his work as a composer, in
dance, theatre, television and especially for film, where his credits
include features JERRY & TOM, CLUB LAND, and BLEACHER BUMS (all
directed by Saul Rubinek) as well as The FISHING TRIP and HEART:
The Marilyn Bell Story. Most recently he penned music for the amazing
animated short THE STONE OF FOLLY winner of the PRIX de JURY at
the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. In the summer of 2002 he co-presented
the concert IMAGINE THE SOUND of PEACE with his wife, Roula Said
and premiered SHURUM BURUM JAZZ CIRCUS, a commissioned work for
the 11 musicians and 2 circus performers. David has received numerous
grants and resident fellowships for study, composition and performance.
He was nominated for the 2002 Louis Applebaum Award for Excellence
in Film and Television Composition.
MARILYN LERNER - Montreal born pianist/improviser Marilyn
Lerner has performed widely in Canada and abroad, has recorded extensively
over the past ten years and has also written for film, theatre,
radio and television and has also produced several audio art pieces
using computer technology. She is currently working on projects
with audio artist Ken Gregory and poet Patrick Freisen. She has
performed with the likes of Jane Bunnett, the great late Tito Puente,
Gerry Hemingway and Steve Lacy. Recording highlights include Birds
Are Returning (Jazz Focus), recorded in Havana Cuba, "close"
duos and trios with Queen Mab (Lori Freedman on clarinets) (Spool),
From Both Ends of the Earth (Arc Records) and a duet with singer
David Wall featuring original settings of contemporary Yiddish poetry,
entitled "Still Soft Voiced Heart"(Traditional Crossroads).
She is currently completing a solo improvised project entitled Face
Future Face to be released on the Quebec label Ambience Magnetique
as well as a jazz duo recording with guitar legend Sonny Greenwich
for CBC records. In the summer of 2003 she will be in Weimar and
Kiev teaching and performing contemporary Jewish music.
BOB STEVENSON Robert has been an active force in the music
community as a player, conductor and composer since the early 70s.
Robert is a founding member of several new music groups including
the Evergreen Club, music dance orchestra, Critical Band and Hemispheres;
where he also assumed the role of conductor and Artistic Director.
As a performer, Robert's background is wide ranging and diverse,
encompassing many forms including jazz, classical, new music and
free improvisation. He works with everyone from R. Murray Schafer,
John Oswald and Michael Snow to the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band,
Arraymusic and Kevin Volans. As a composer Robert has been commissioned
by choreographers Bill James, Maxine Heppner and Holly Small; new
music groups Arraymusic, Innovations en Concert and the Modern Quartet;
and documentary film producers Laurent Productions and fission media.
DAVID WALL is an award winning singer and composer. As lead
vocalist of the much revered rhythm and blues band the Bourbon Tabernacle
Choir he toured North America extensively, appearing regularly on
major television and radio broadcasts. He has performed and recorded
with an impressive cross-section of artists including Big Sugar,
The Barenaked Ladies, Lorraine Segato and Ken Whiteley. His most
recent musical journey has been into the world of Jewish tradition
where he has achieved success recording and touring internationally
as lead singer of Toronto's Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and Winnipeg's
Both Ends Of The Earth as well as his critically acclaimed collaboration
with Marilyn Lerner. He has scored and/or contributed compositions
to a long list of projects including: History's Courtroom (2002;
6-part series, Screenlife/History Television) Stress (2002; large
scale video installation, commissioned by Bruce Mau Design for the
Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery), The Struma (2001; Simcha
Jacobovici, director, HBO, Yorkshire Television). In 1998 he wrote
the #1 Canadian rock/alternative song "The Scene" for
pop-band Big Sugar. In 1998 and 2000 he received Canada Council
grants for Cantorial vocal studies.
