The Ensemble
The Ensemble
Kiran Ahluwalia performs in several different configurations depending
on the nature of the event. On her recent recording she was able
to work with some extremely talented musicians, one of whom is Canadian,
while two come from the vibrant South Asian music scene in England.
She plans to tour with this ensemble in the summer of 2001.
Dhiren Raichura, guitar
Multi-instrumentalist, record producer, engineer, arranger, and
studio owner, Dhiren has played with many of the great names in
Indian and Pakistani music, including the world reknown Ustad Nusrat
Fateh Ali Khan. He is adept at both North and South Indian music
and many western forms, such as jazz and funk, as well. Although
the guitar is not a traditional instrument of India, in the hands
of Dhiren Raichura it adds a light and graceful touch to this ensemble.
Kiran Thakrar, harmonium
Kiran Thakrar is a many faceted musical talent, combining multi-instrumental
abilities with composing, arranging, producing, and recording. He
has performed in various music styles ranging from Indian folk to
fusion and had many appearances and performances with renowned names
such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. An award winning tabla player in
his youth, Kiran started to play the harmonium purely for pleasure.
Today he is a virtuoso on the instrument and has toured in over
25 countries.
Suresh Ramotar, tabla
Born in Guyana, and now resident in Toronto, Suresh has worked with
Kiran Ahluwalia for over three years. A skilled tabla player, Suresh
has worked in a number of countries performing with both classical
and popular music artists, and with classical dancers. He is particularly
versatile in his ability to improvise with ghazal singers. His years
of experience working with Kiran produce a level of communication
between the voice and drum which is a key element in the performance
of ghazals.
